About this workout
This beginner session adds short, fast pickups to an easy run. You run ten pickups of 30 seconds at about mile effort, fast but controlled, each followed by 90 seconds of easy running. On a treadmill you raise the belt speed for the pickup and lower it for the recovery.
Short pickups improve leg speed and running economy and make faster paces feel more familiar. The 90 second recovery is long enough to start each pickup fresh. Hold a tall posture and quick steps, and keep a hand near the rail when the belt speed changes.
It suits beginners and anyone who trains indoors in winter. Use it once a week in the base phase. Progress to twelve pickups, then try 200 m repeats on a track.
Tips
- Change the belt speed a few seconds early, since the belt needs time to adjust.
- Keep the pickups at a pace you could hold for a few minutes.
- Run the recoveries truly easy.
