About this workout
Easy running builds the base everything else stands on. At a conversational effort the heart, lungs and leg muscles adapt to regular running, and tendons and bones have time to catch up. Thirty minutes is a sensible length for runners in their first months who can already jog without stopping.
Walk briskly or jog very slowly for five minutes, then run 25 minutes at an easy pace. You should be able to speak in full sentences. If you can only manage a few words, slow down. On hills, keep the effort the same and let the pace drop. Finish with the feeling that you could have run another ten minutes.
Run this two to four times a week. When it feels comfortable every time, extend it by five minutes every week or two, or add one longer run on the weekend.
Tips
- Use the talk test, full sentences mean the pace is right.
- Run the same route now and then to see your pace improve at the same heart rate.
- Take a short walk break if you need it, then continue.
